A Buttock Lift using Fat (Brazilian Butt Lift or BBL) transfer provides an improvement in contour by the use of fat transfer to the buttock.

This technique is useful if there is only a small amount of skin laxity, and there are sufficient fatty bulges elsewhere on the body (such as on the tummy, flanks, back, arms or thighs) to take the fat from. Fat is removed from the other areas of the body using liposuction, and the fat is then injected back into the buttocks, giving a firmer, higher and rounder buttock. This has the added advantage of giving an improved contour where the fat is removed.

If there is a large amount of skin laxity then a full buttock lift with scars is required to remove excess skin, with the scars hidden under normal underpants and swimming costumes.

The surgery involves a general anaesthetic, with most people going home the same day. *Most people return to work within a few days following the surgery, and a pressure compression garment must be worn after the surgery which minimises the bruising and swelling and helps produce an even contour. Heavy activities and sport should be avoided for a few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ideal candidate is someone who wants a fuller, rounder-shaped buttock, who has good skin elasticity and areas of fat in other areas of the body where fat can be harvested.

When determining the total costs of Buttock lift with Fat Transfer (Brazilian Butt Lift) surgery, there are several factors that you need to keep in mind. These include the following:

Surgeon’s fee
This will depend on the surgeon’s skills and experience, but also on the amount of time your operation will take.

Anaesthetist’s fees
This will also depend on the experience and expertise of the anaesthetist. Depending on the anaesthetist, he or she may charge by the hour or procedure.

Hospital fee
This includes the materials used during the surgery and the length of your hospital stay.

Other costs
This includes the cost of medical tests, medications, and post-surgery garments.

The surgery enhances the appearance of the buttocks and is considered a cosmetic procedure. This means that it is not covered by Medicare or your private health insurance.

After your consultation with Dr Cope, we will provide you with a detailed and personalised breakdown of the total costs of your BBL surgery. However, you can expect your total cost (including surgeon, anaesthetist and hospital fees) to start at around $15,000.

Liposuction reduces the amount of fat under the skin and relies on your skin elasticity in taking up the resulting loose skin – the younger you are the better your skin elasticity and the better your skin takes up after liposuction.

Buttock Lift using Fat Transfer (Brazilian Buttock Lift) can be performed at any time of the year. However, everyone gets some bruising and swelling after the procedure, which can restrict swimming, walking on the beach and other sporting activities in summer. After Butt Lift using Fat Transfer a compression garment needs to be worn for at least a few weeks (sometimes up to 6-8 weeks), and it is more comfortable to do this in the winter months.

Fat is harvested from elsewhere in the body by liposuction (common areas are the abdomen, love-handles and thighs), and then filtered before reinjecting into the buttock. If you are thin then this can limit the amount of fat that can be harvested, and therefore limit the amount of buttock augmentation size increase possible with Buttock Lift using Fat Transfer (Brazilian Butt Lift) .

Not all the fat that is transferred survives or ‘takes’, but by 6-8 weeks the long-term result is seen and is permanent. Most patients achieve the size increase they desire in one procedure, but sometimes 2 are needed.

The operation is performed as a day-surgery procedure in an accredited hospital

Fat is removed by liposuction from other areas of the body such as abdomen, flanks and thighs, resulting in an improved contour in these areas. The fat is the then filtered to ensure that only pure fat is injected into the buttock.

Small incisions (less than 5mm) are used to harvest and inject the fat during the fat transfer procedure. These scars are rarely visible down the track.

*During the first week after surgery you need to rest and take things quietly at home. When you go home there will be waterproof dressings covering the wounds, which normally stay on for one week, allowing you to shower normally. You should wear your compression garment the whole time, which needs to be worn for at least a few weeks (and for some people 6-8 weeks). Most people feel well enough to drive to the postoperative visit, which is usually 5-7 days later, and are back to work by this time.

For most people it is 3-4 weeks until they are ready to return to sport and full activities*
